The Critical Care Complex is a stunning new building at the Ulster Hospital comprising 7 state of the art theatres, a 16 bed intensive care unit (ICU), modern laboratories and extensive central sterile services(CSSD). A key consideration for this facility has been improved patient and visitor environment, including natural light and integrated art which can contribute to a restfulness and healing. Experienced staff had specifically requested the inclusion of a water feature in the ICU waiting area because of the known calming benefits of flowing water. To this end H2O design were commissioned to deliver a water feature which would have the de-stressing benefits of moving water without the health risks of legionella from still water or vapour.H2O design provided a large closed bubble-tank on time, and within budgetand were more than willing to meet on site and offer designs tailored to our particular needs. When concerns were raised about potential noise, H2O design provided options which would minimise motor noise and their patented bubble tank was the perfect solution. They even sourced possible tile backdrops for the Trust to choose from as the more conventional mirror backing would be unsuitable in our context. The bespoke design includes gently alternating lighting in a spectrum which picked up on other features within the build and added subtle interest to the artwork. The end result has been a resounding success and staff are confident it will have a real impact on the well-being of the anxious relatives sitting in the ICU wait. I would have no hesitation in commending H2O design as a professional and efficient company, to other health organisations wishing to create unique and attractive water features for the benefit of their patients and users.
